High Commission organises Tree Planting Event to mark the
‘National Youth Day’ of India on 12 January 2022

The High Commission of India organised a ‘Tree Planting’ Event at Berakas Beach on 12 January 2022 to celebrate the ‘National Youth Day’ of India as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. On this occasion, 75 tree saplings were planted to mark 75 years of India’s Independence. Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash'ari, Hon’ble LegCo Member and President of Brunei Youth Council, and H.E. Dayang Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Primary Resources & Tourism, represented the Government of Brunei at the event, which witnessed participation of around 70 enthusiastic participants.

In his remarks, H. E. Mr. Ajaneesh Kumar, High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam, thanked the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism for their support and assistance to enable High Commission organize this event successfully.  He, in particular, expressed his gratitude to the officials of the Ministry for facilitating the painting of a Banyan tree mural done at the Commonwealth Canopy. He highlighted that the Banyan tree is the National Tree of India, associated with prosperity and is considered as a wish fulfilling tree.

Touching upon the importance of the National Youth Day, the High Commissioner said that in 1984, Government of India took the decision to celebrate the birthday of great Indian philosopher and visionary Swami Vivekananda, i.e. 12 January, as the National Youth Day, who is a source of inspiration for millions of youth across the world. “Man is born to conquer nature and not to follow it” - this quote by Swami Vivekananda still reverberates in the ears of every individual who wishes to overcome any difficulty with their fearless attitude. The High Commissioner emphasised that the teachings of Swami Vivekananda are all the more relevant in today’s world as it extolled the virtues of creative thinking and risk taking attitude of the youth for a better future. It was Swami Vivekananda, who had said that “Take risks in your life, if you win, you can lead! If you loose, you can guide!!”

The High Commissioner highlighted that with the planting of 75 trees, the High Commission is joining hands with the Government and people of Brunei, in a small way, to ensure the success of Brunei’s Vision 2035 of Greener Brunei by planting 500,000 trees.
