High Commission of India celebrates 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026 at Chancery 


The High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day on the morning of 15 August 2026 at the Chancery Building in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The ceremony commenced with playing National Song, Vande Mataram, followed by hoisting the Indian national flag by His Excellency Shri Ramu Abbagani, High Commissioner and the resonant singing of the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The event was attended by around 300 members of the Indian diaspora, school children, Persons of Indian Origin, and Friends of India.

Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner delivered his remarks and shared excerpts from the Address to the Nation by the Hon’ble President of India on the eve of the 80th Independence Day. The Address highlighted the invaluable contributions of students, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, healthcare workers, workers and farmers to the nation’s progress. It also paid tribute to the dedication and devotion to duty of the personnel of the three Armed Forces, Armed Police Forces and police forces, whose unwavering commitment continues to strengthen the nation and advance India towards its goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Subsequently there were cultural dance and singing performances by the Indian diaspora and presentation of prizes and certificates to the winners of Bharat Ko Janiye (BKJ) Quiz, My India My Story Campaign, India Through My Lens, My Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 Painting Competition and all the participants of the day's cultural performances.

The programme concluded on a cordial note, with the gathering coming together to savour a selection of authentic Indian cuisines and mark the occasion and celebrate the enduring bonds of friendship between India and Brunei Darussalam.

The 80th Independence Day celebration at the Chancery was a resounding success, bringing together the Indian community, Friends of India and well-wishers in a spirit of unity, patriotism and shared pride in India’s remarkable journey. The event served as a heartfelt tribute to India’s enduring legacy of freedom, sovereignty and unity, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to progress, development and international cooperation.
